Golf - So Much More Than Just A Walk In The Park.

It’s a truism that the one hole you play like a pro this week is the one that convinces you to come back and play again next week. There is something extraordinarily pleasing about hitting a good shot - drive, chip or putt. It’s that one good shot that makes the game of golf so much more pleasurable than just a walk through the park.

Golf is the great leveller. You can win a game but you can never beat the game. It will make a fool out of you, if not sooner then later.
Some compete to relieve the tension and stress they have built up at work and others work up incredible tension and pressure playing the game.

So why do we do it? Of the tens of million of people who play golf around the world each week not many are any good at it. Yet we come back, week after week, to play again.

It may be that every game is different and so we do not easily become cynical. No two trips to the golf course will ever be the same, no matter how lovely a participant you are.

It’s always funny to hear individuals claim to play golf ‘for the exercise’ and then watch them downing beers at the 19th. Yet, beer drinking aside, there is an element of physicality to the game and a long walk around a golf course, trying to knock the cover off a little white ball, is a reasonably robust form of exercise. A round of 18 holes is equivalent to walking about 4 miles.

It’s nice to get out of the house and be outdoors and golf courses are generally lovely parks with manicured lawns and shady areas and a bit of water here and there. Nice places to get a step closer to nature. Maybe that’s why we do it?

There is also the need we have to relieve tension and anxiety and golf can certainly help to do this. The exercise alone helps to mitigate pressure but there is also the satisfaction of repeatedly clubbing something very hard. Maybe the lowly golf ball serves as a metaphor for whatever is stressing you at that time. Do you see the picture of your bosses/wifes/husbands head on the ball? Look closely! Maybe they’re all there.

It’s a fantastic way to spend time with mates, and the few hours spent around the course and at the clubhouse afterwards, is a very agreeable way to talk on all sorts of social issues that have nothing to do with golf.

Many folks use golf as a business device – a way to lure a prospect away from his/her office and have them alone for some bonding time. Many business deals have been done on golf courses and the value of the game as business meeting place should not be underestimated.

So which is it? Which characteristic of the game brings you back to play, week after week? Is it the never-ending contest to master the game or is it the exercise? Could it be that for you golf is just a necessary de-stressor or do you come back for the social aspects and the chance to spend time with friends? My guess is that its all of these things and sometimes its just the masochistic need we have to punish and humiliate ourselves.

Whatever our motivation may be, all golfers would dearly love to play better golf. Did you know that making a small improvement in simple 3 areas can improve your game beyond belief?

An online community or forum is a group of individuals who interact with each other using the internet for educational, technical, social or other purposes. While in online community the users may remain relatively stranger with no bond between them in forums individual form a bond with their shared common interests.

Earlier, Yahoo groups and Google groups provided means to form communities and through chat rooms helped people to discuss topics based on common personal interest. But now days there are many social networking sites and blogs which have expanded the virtual communities further by each becoming a community on its own. Most of the online communities follow a similar life cycle wherein each participant starts off as an observer. After a while they become novice then they start interacting in the community. After a certain period of time by constant participation they become a regular and later on a leader where his opinions are treated with greater respect and he provides more suggestions and ideas. After a long time the participant may decide to leave the community for varied reasons like change of interest or a busy schedule and hence he becomes an elder.

Forums are governed and maintained by group of individuals known as moderators or administrators. To become a member of forum a person usually has to fill a registration form giving their personal details. Some forums allow user to remain anonymous. There are rules and policy to be followed for continuous participation in a forum. If forum policy is not adhered to there are several steps which are taken like issuing preliminary warning followed by short term ban and permanent ban, IP blocking if the offence is repeated. The forum consists of a tree like directory structure with threads with post within them at the lowest end. Thread is generally a topic around which the whole discussion is based. All members of the forum can participate in the thread by writing post which is nothing but a participants message in a block along with his details along with his participation history. All the member content is monitored by moderator who keeps the forum clean by deleting inappropriate content, manages it, provided topics for discussion, and provides answers to user queries related to forum or the topic concerned. The administrators deal with smooth running of the forums. Their responsibility can include promoting member to moderator or vice versa, make forum rules and policies, maintain database or make decision regarding the appearance of the forum.

Online community or forum is most likely to succeed if they address the immediate real world needs of its members and has topics which make it unique from others.
